Fall this year may feel drab. Being stuck inside all of the time with nothing to do doesn’t have to be the normal! This week we’ve put together a list of 11 things you can do at home, or near the Jackson, MI and surrounding areas, to keep things fun and exciting this autumn!
- Get Lost in a Corn Maze
Two of the most popular corn mazes in our area are found at Meckley’s Flavor Fruit Farm in Cement City and Red Egg Farm in Spring Arbor. Round up some friends and get lost in the maze! Who will make it out first??
- Pick Fresh Apples
One fall activity that is a great “go to” for many is picking apples. For a fee most apple orchards will let you pick apples on their property to take home for whatever purpose you choose. Whether it be pies, cider, snacks for your rabbits or just for decoration on your counter to make everyone think that you eat healthy, apple picking is a great way to get outdoors this fall. Both Clearview Orchards in Haslett and Meckley’s Flavor Fruit Farm in Cement City have wonderful reviews and are favorite local spots for apple picking.
- Take a Hike or Bike Ride
Did you know that Jackson is full of public trails?? Ella Sharp Park has multiple trails that you can ride bikes on or hike through while taking in the Earth’s beauty. Close by, The Cascades also have paved trails that go through a big chunk of Jackson. Then who can forget the Dahlem Center off of South Jackson Rd near Jackson College?? All of these options are totally free to the public, however the Dahlem Center runs off of donations so feel free to leave a few dollars in the box posted at the entrance.
- Make Your Own Candy
We’re in the holiday season right? I mean, it’s practically Christmas already, so it’s time to start making some goodies! Experiment a little in the kitchen. Bake cookies and cakes, cook new meals, and make candy! Fancy chocolate bars, sugar filled lollipops, colorful gummies, sticky taffys, the options are endless with candy, so take some time to look up new recipes and get to work!
- Have a Bonfire
I mean come on, what says fall more than s’mores around the bonfire? Throw on a comfy flannel, grab a blanket and chair and sit around the cozy fire with some friends and family exchanging ghost stories or folktales. It doesn’t have to be anything extravagant to be fun!
- Go Horseback Riding
Riding horses can be fun year round, but riding one in the fall is extra special because you get a tour of Michigan’s natural beauty from a different perspective than you would in your car. Hidden Ponds Horse Rescue is a nonprofit in Coldwater that offers many activities for their guests, horseback riding is just one of them! Reach out before you head out there and make a booking for you and your friends, you won’t regret it! (They also have hiking trails)
- Get Spooked at a Haunted House
Boo! October is the month of scares around here, and one way people love to get scared is at a haunted house. These may not be for everyone, but those who love them, check out these places!
Darksyde Acres in Jonesville – Over 70,000 sq.ft with 5 extreme haunted houses
Corpse Barn in Jackson/Napoleon – 3 floors with guest interaction
Jackson’s Underworld in Jackson – 4 floors with 2 haunts. Coupons available on their website!
- Enjoy a Farmers Market
We can’t all have green thumbs and creative mentalities right? That’s what farmers markets are made for! Whether you want to pick up some fresh produce grown by the best farmers in the area, or find some unique crafts for the holiday season, a farmers market is a great place to start looking. The Grand River Farmers Market right in the heart of downtown Jackson is a great place to find goodies on the weekends. Another less known place in our area is The Green Market run through Henry Ford Allegiance Hospital. Every Thursday from 9am to 2pm you can find vendors across the street from the hospital.
- Visit a Pumpkin Patch
Pumpkin spice, pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, pumpkin seeds and jack-o-lanterns, are just a few of the many reasons that pumpkins are a staple in fall for many people. Really though, what fun is it buying them already picked at a major retailer?? There are plenty of pumpkin patches around the area that you can pick some up. Some places pick them for you, others will let you out in the field to pick them yourself. Either way you’ll be supporting local businesses and having fun at the same time!
Meckley’s Flavor Fruit Farm in Cement City
Red Egg Farm in Spring Arbor
Cedar View Farms in Addison
Smilowski Family Gardens in Napoleon
Why is it called a jack-o-lantern anyway?? The Irish used to carve faces into turnips and potatoes, but when they came over to America they began to carve pumpkins. The name jack-o-lantern though comes from an Irish folktale about a man named Stingy Jack. Look it up, it’s an interesting short tale!
- Go Ziplining
Okay, so currently there isn’t any ziplining near Jackson, but we found this place and thought it was so cool we just had to share with you all! If you’re more of the adventurous daredevil type then check out Tree Runner Adventure Parks in West Bloomfield. They offer over 45 ziplines and 14 different aerial trails. There are over 250 suspended obstacle challenges at this park and they are provided at all different difficulty levels. So get a group together and take a road trip out to West Bloomfield for a day this fall!
- Create the Perfect Movie Marathon
Sometimes it’s nice to spend the day in, especially during the colder months. A great way to get in the fall spirit is to curl up with some hot cocoa and have a movie marathon. Before sitting down, create a list of movies you want to watch, then stick to the order of that list. This way you won’t have as much trouble choosing what to watch! Don’t know where to start? Take a look at the short list we made of popular fall movies below.
As always we want to know your thoughts! What are your favorite things to do during the fall? And where are your favorite places to go? Let us know in the comments!!
