Items Needed

From Dollar Tree

  • Plunger
  • Mop Head (Yarn, Jute, or Rope Dog Toys can also be used)
    • Optional Decor
      • Beads
      • Feathers
      • Succulents or Greenery

Likely to be had at Home

  • Scissors
  • Hot Glue Gun
    • To Dye Fabric (Optional)
      • Food Coloring (Fabric Dye)
      • Table Salt
      • Stock Pot
      • Tongs
      • Strainer

The first step of this project is to remove the plunger and mop head from their handles. Simply unscrew them, there is no need to cut them off. (Keep any discarded items, we may use them in a future DIY! ;))

Pro Tip!

Use Goo Gone to help get any stickers off of the handles

Now separate the mop head from the plastic bit. You can use wire cutters to cut it or stick something like your scissors or a screwdriver underneath and push up. With a bit of force it should pop off.

Now that it is separated, unravel the fabric. Because the mop we found is white, we decided to dye half of our fabric. Some Dollar Trees may have different colored ones to choose from. Dying the fabric is totally optional!

To Dye with Food Coloring: (If using fabric dye, follow instructions on the package)

Fill a pot with 2 quarts water and add 1/2 cup salt. The salt will help the coloring adhere to the fibers in the fabric. (If additional water is needed, add 1/2 cup salt per 2 quarts water). Stir until the salt has dissolved.

Add approximately 6 tablespoons of food coloring per 2 quarts of water. Stir.

Heat the pot over medium-high heat until the water begins to boil, then decrease the heat to medium-low until it simmers. Add the fabric and completely submerge. Let this sit, stirring occasionally, for a minimum of 30 minutes. The longer it sits, the more vibrant the color should be. (After leaving on the stove for about an hour, our fabric sat in the water over night.)

When ready, rinse the fabric off with warm water until the water runs clear. Air dry completely before using, otherwise your hands will get dyed in the process!

Once the fabric is dry it’s time to start putting it on the rod. With the plunger handle in front of you, take two pieces of fabric and lay them underneath. Create a loop at the top and continue pulling the end of the fabric through the loop and around the rod. (See attached pictures or check us out on TikTok @thehubjxn to see it in first person!) We started on the outer ends of the handle, leaving about an inch open, with these shorter pieces and worked our way in.

After a row or two you can begin tying pieces of the fabric together in a tight knot to make them longer. Don’t worry too much about the knots being visible, you can add more later and give some character to the piece. Continue creating these loops with your preferred lengths of fabric until the rod is covered.

Tie two or more pieces of the fabric together to create the hanging structure of this piece. The more you tie together, the lower the art will hang. Tie each side to opposite ends of the plunger handle that we left open earlier.

Once you are done adding the fabric you can add more decorative items. Beads, feathers, jewels, greenery etc. We decided to add some greenery that we found at the Dollar Tree on ours.

To add this greenery piece, we chose some pieces that we liked and made a bouquet out of them before tying them together at the base. Once together, you can cut off the longer parts of the stem as they aren’t needed and just get in the way. Now, simply hot glue the greenery wherever you’d like on your wall hanger.

And that’s it! You’re ready to bring some BOHO chic style to any room for less than $5. Nice!
